Jun 6, GPS software utilities

GPS Software Utilities let you transfer data between a GPS receiver and other GPS applications. Others make it possible to calibrate maps or to create your own maps. Or to use several GPS applications with only one GPS receiver. Transferring from one file format to another is very useful too. Or send your position via SMS to a server, where your position is plotted on a map. And many more. GPS software utilities are indispensable for everyone who is serious about GPS.

MxGPS 9x from MxGeo is a user-friendly application to transfer data between ESRI’s ArcMap application and Garmin GPS. GPS data can be downloaded directly into ArcMap and stored in shapefile or geodatabase format. Downloaded data is automatically projected into the same spatial reference as the map. If required, a datum transformation is applied to ensure the best possible results. Map features such as points, lines and polygons can be easily uploaded to the GPS as waypoints or track logs. Simply select the layer and features that you require and click 'Send to GPS'. The data will then be available on the GPS unit. Johan Franson made GpsGate that lets you share one GPS receiver between several applications. GpsGate can create any number of virtual ports which most NMEA enabled GPS applications can connect to. So, there is no need anymore to completely close one application, before launching another. Being able to switch between several running programs, without hanging your pocket PC, is GREAT. GpsGate can also be used as a Simulator. Define a set of waypoints and GpsGate will simulate a GPS traveling between those points. You can also log and playback real-time GPS data. GPS Sentry from SentrySoft is a Today plug-in for pocket PC. It helps you keep an eye on your GPS on the Today screen. Features include: -Small footprint, both in memory and on the Today screen. -Multipaged display with a full set of GPS data and statistics. -Log position data in Trimble GML or NMEA $GPRMC format. With GpsGate the program can use your GPS at the same time as other applications. No need to switch it on and off. xImage GPS software from Garmin allows you to retrieve and update images on your Garmin GPS and makes it possible to get a screenshot from most Garmin GPS models. GPS2CAD enables design professionals to easily and inexpensively use recreational-grade GPS units to collect field information and plot it in their CAD program. The program is designed to work with AutoCAD, versions 14.01 through 2004. EasyGPS is free GPS software to create, edit and transfer waypoints and routes between your computer and your GPS receiver. It is much easier to encode waypoint coordinates and names via the keyboard of your PC than it is via the rocker key on your GPS receiver. And it is much easier to manage long lists of waypoints and their coordinates on your computer screen than it is on your GPS receiver. GPSdb does the same, but also lets you download and organize your GPS track logs. Only for Garmin GPS receivers and it is not free. The free and ever popular G7ToWin is GPS software designed to transfer data between Garmin or Lowrance/Eagle GPS units and a PC. The program supports up- and download of waypoints, track logs, routes and events. Events only for Lowrance/Eagle receivers. And from units which support it, you can download a copy of the current GPS screen-display as a Windows bitmap (like PrintScreen, that copies the PC screen to the clipboard). G7ToCE is the (beta) version for pocket PC’s. Another free GPS software is MyGPS. It lets you calibrate maps, starting from a raster graphic file (.bmp, .jpeg, .gif, etc.). It enables the up- and download of waypoints, routes and tracks between your GPS receiver and the calibrated map. It can display altitude profiles of routes and tracks and allows a bi-directional interface, using the protocol of Garmin "eTrex" and "Geko" GPS receivers.

Dave Patton's DRGMapCal is Shareware GPS software which automates the process of generating map calibration files for Digital Raster Graphics (DRG) map images and generates OziExplorer calibration files (.map) for Canadian NTS Toporama topographic map images and Landsat 7 ortho-images, as well as MapQuest "street maps". The program will also generate JPR calibration files for the Toporama map images and Landsat 7 ortho-images for use with Fugawi and Memory-Map Navigator. Vic Fraenckel’s GeoCalc GPS software contains sub-applications in a tabbed-notebook format and the user can easily change from one sub-app to another by clicking on the appropriate tab. It performs the following: Conversion of angles in DMS format to decimal degrees and inverse, conversion of UTM grid co-ordinates to Lat/Lon and inverse and Vincenty’s Direct and Inverse calculation. The user can select from a list of standard ellipse/datum names. The program is Free and for that price you even get the source code. This GPS software can be found at www.windreader.com/geodesy/. Mike Morrow’s NMEAgent is an averaging GPS software program (and SO much more) designed to collect and average multiple GPS Lat/Long readings in an effort to produce an accurate location Lat/Long. Run it with a unmoving antenna for at least 24 hours. The reading for the various user selected time intervals will tend to converge to a single number. This is very close to Where You Are in the WGS84 space. Marcin Marszalek’s TrackAnalyser analyses tracks saved in OziExlorer's PLT format. The GPS software analyses tracks (probably) gathered using a GPS receiver and saved in PLT format, native track format of OziExplorer software. It generates statistics concerning not only directly registered values such as location coordinates, altitude and time, but also computed values like distance, climb, speed, pace, vertical speed and slope. Some of the statistics are calculated separately for uphill, flat and downhill travel. It can be found at http://priv.astronet.pl/azzie/TrackAnalyser/ GPSBabel GPS software converts waypoints from one format to another, whether that format is a common mapping format like Delorme, Streets and Trips, or even a serial up- or download. Backends include GPX, Magellan and Garmin serial protocols, Geocaching.com .loc, GPSMan, Garmin Mapsource .mps, Magellan Mapsend .wpt, and many others. The free VisualGPS incorporates many advanced features found in professional programs. Its sole purpose is to display graphically specific NMEA 0183 sentences. This is great for testing GPS receivers, including eventual external antenna and RS-232 output to a PC. VisualGPSce is a Beta-version for the pocket PC. VisualGPSXP is the professional version of VisualGPS. It is a general purpose utility for monitoring the output of a GPS receiver. Cetus GPS for Palm OS is the Swiss Army Knife of GPS tracking and field data collection. It is intended for use by GIS surveyors, scientists, explorers and GPS enthusiasts who need to extend the features of their standard GPS equipment. The GPS software offers a Navigation assistant, Position databases, a Track logger and Data analysis and conversion. Frontbase GPS for Windows is an easy-to-use Garmin GPS software that makes it simple to transfer waypoints, routes and tracks between your Garmin GPS and PC. Use Frontbase GPS software to
* download waypoints, routes and tracks from Garmin GPS to a text file, Microsoft Excel file and to the clipboard.
